Okay. Trail lingo refers to a day of zero miles as a 'Zero'. Thus the 'Nero' is a day with nearly zero miles. They usually involve a swimming hole or a town. Today, was a landmark... the Maine Junction in Vermont, where the Long Trail goes north to Canada and the Appalachian Trail bangs east toward Dartmouth, NH. I celebrated with Spaceship and Sawman at three different swim holes near Killington ski resort. Today's tally? 4 stellar miles.

Carrie Coffee was my roommate last night at the newly renovated Bascom Lodge on top of Mt Greylock in Mass. She hiked the trail in 4 sections over 4 years and will be celebrating her 88th birthday in a few weeks. She drove here from Houston Texas (via California and Seattle) to attend the annual ATC meeting in Rutland, VT this year. I gave her some names of people to say 'Hi' to up there. Okay... so I'm cheating. I walked only 10 miles from town and found a cheap roof to stay under. New Jersey is already exceeding my greatest expectations. Here's an example... the technology of a coffee making device! ... that, and this lovely bunkhouse is brand new and still smells like fresh cut pine. They've asked me for help with this appliance but my skills in coffee production are limited to the french press method. Their names are Mr. Ed and Lightweight.

Here's a view of Duncanon PA from across the Susquahana River. The 'ATeacher' told me it resembles what Prague's stone bridges would look like if Prague were a really run down city. All the hikers stay at a really cheap motel in a historic building with serious code issues. The bar downstairs has 'Troegs' beer on tap. I tried the 'Troegenator', their double bock brew. The microbrewery is located about 15 miles east in Harrisburg, PA's capital city.

A teacher training group came up to our shelter a few days ago, full of questions about our hike. We traded valuable information for coldcut sandwiches and produce. They were sponsored by Leki, a trekking pole company. Thruhikers inside the shelter include Phoenix, InTents, Spaceship (and his dog, Safety Patrol); Andy's out front.
So, I'm in Daleville, about 50 miles up the trail, and Phoenix and I were identified by a local teacher from this group. She's going to tell all her friends tomorrow about how we've made it so far in just a few days.
